Hebrews is an exciting but enigmatic epistle. As early as Origen in the third century, scholars noted that its contents, whilst in step theologically with the Apostle Paul, were rendered in a different Greek style. Some believed the penman to be Clement, others Luke. Origen concluded:“But who wrote the epistle, in truth God knows.” 

In this course, students will learn to dispel the pop summary of the Hebrews as “Jesus is better,” which can so easily be turned into an excuse for “replacement theology” or “supercessionism.” Through close study of the structure, argument, and style of the letter, as well as engagement with a range of NT scholarship, students will come to grips with the writer’s fundamental message: that, in the eschatological fulfillment of time, heaven has touched earth in the incarnate Son, that this heavenly reality is still present, and this heavenly reality will one day be fully manifested again.

Online only, runs 10 weeks, meeting 2 hr./wk. via Zoom. Students will also have the option to participate in class discussion on the Davenant Common Room Discord server. This is a graduate-level course. Although a BA is not a necessary pre-requisite for this course, students should come prepared to do graduate-level work.
