Description

This course will offer close reading of Thomas’s Summa Theologica qq. 27–43 on the doctrine of the Trinity. Foundational to all systematics, the doctrine of the Trinity represents the pinnacle of Christian speculation on the mystery of God as revealed in Scripture. As one of the most significant theologians of all time, Thomas offers an account of Trinity that remains relevant in navigating concerns in modern theology, both constructive and destructive, on the sacred doctrine of God. In this course, the student will be guided through the technicality of Thomas’s trinitarian doctrine. We will highlight significant points of difference between his account and those of others, such as how we constitute persons via relations of origin and not processions; how the trinitarian missions operate within the broader logic of the doctrine of internal processions; the place of Christ as the revelation of the whole Trinity; and so on. The goal of the course will be to gain knowledge of God that will fruition into greater love for him as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
