Few things are more debated today that the nature of sex and gender. Amid rapid cultural shifts, the church is often left spinning as it seeks answers in Scripture. Yet attempts to defend what the Bible says about gender often simply end up bogged down in arguments about proof-texts and narrow prescriptions for how men and women should supposedly act.

The Davenant Institute invites you to a two-day seminar at 3Crosses church to develop a robust theology of gender based upon the entirety of Scripture. The seminar will be lead by Dr. Alastair Roberts, a Teaching Fellow for the Davenant Institute.

Please join us for a Wednesday and Thursday of fellowship and scholarship built around a biblical theology of the sexes. See details below about our Keynote Speaker and the schedule.

SEMINAR THEME

Beyond Rules and Roles:
Scripture and the Sexes

Contemporary gender debates among evangelicals often involve detailed disputes about certain key New Testament texts to do with marriage and church leadership.

Yet within the Scriptures there are extensive and underexplored resources for a Christian understanding of the sexes: narratives, poetry, wisdom, prophecy, song, symbol, and letters.

This seminar will investigate the scope of the biblical witness about the sexes, demonstrating the many ways that it can inform and enrich our thought and practice.

Escaping the narrow orbit of a few key texts, the prominence and importance of the symbolism of male and female throughout the Bible will be examined. The seminar will consider how the broader scriptural witnesses can be integrated into a richer account of the sexes and how such an account might change the complexion of pressing questions in our contemporary cultural and church contexts.

Attendees will go away with a better grasp of Scripture’s substantive teaching on the sexes, and be equipped to put this theology into practice both in church and in engagement with the wider culture.
