An Update from DLI Associate Director Jonathan Roberts
2018 was a tremendous year for the Davenant Latin Institute. We have been greatly blessed by the quantity and quality of our students. This Fall, in addition to offering our introductory Latin courses, the very capable Ryan Hurd taught a course on Early Modern Theology proper texts.
We will have some exciting news sometime late in the Spring semester. So, stay tuned. Given that most of our students are graduate students and pastors, we offer a number of scholarships. Our course offerings for the Spring of 2019:
LAT501: Introduction to Theological Latin, Pt. I
This the first semester of our introductory Latin course. Students learn Latin grammar and vocabulary by reading, writing, and speaking in Latin.
LAT502: Introduction to Theological Latin, Pt. II
The second semester of Latin studies prepares students to read Latin texts independently and competently.
LAT602: Intermediate Theological Latin Readings, Pt. II
Continuing where LAT601 dropped off, LAT602 begins with texts from medieval authors such as Thomas Aquinas and concludes with texts from the Early Modern Era with authors such as Calvin, Melanchthon, and Suarez. This course functions as a survey of Christian thought and an introduction to specialized theological vocabulary.
LAT711: Christology in the Early Modern Period
This course will focus on Christology, and seeks to prepare students to read Early Modern works on the doctrine of Christ independently and competently. This course will considerably advance your strength in Latin through close reading of a variety of sources taken from the Catholic, Lutheran, and Reformed traditions (with a priority on the latter), to expose you to as much Latin in the Early Modern period as profitably possible. Authors will include a careful selection of important writers in various genres, such as commentaries, disputations, sermons, loci communes.
Jonathan Roberts (M.A., University of Missouri—St. Louis) runs our Introductory and Intermediate courses.
